In past summers, FIC Sentinels have supported conservation and research efforts led by the Fishers Island Seagrass Management Coalition. These collaborations allowed Sentinels to assist with ongoing seagrass studies while gaining hands on experience with coastal monitoring and research methods. All projects were designed and managed by the Coalition, with Sentinels contributing field support as needed.
Sentinels assisted with MPA Watch monitoring efforts focused on documenting human activity within and around seagrass habitats. This work involved walking shoreline transects or surveying from the water and recording activities such as boating, swimming, and fishing within designated seagrass areas.
By helping collect these observations, Sentinels supported efforts to better understand how seagrass habitats are used and where potential pressures may occur. This information helps inform long term seagrass protection and management strategies.
Ground truthing is an important part of seagrass research that involves confirming seagrass presence and condition directly in the field. Sentinels assisted with on the ground observations used to verify and improve seagrass mapping and research data.
This hands on work helped ensure that seagrass information reflected real conditions in the water, strengthening the accuracy of studies and conservation planning efforts led by the Coalition.
Sentinels also contributed to water quality monitoring by assisting with the collection of water samples and recording basic environmental observations. Water quality data, including factors like temperature, clarity, and other conditions, plays an important role in understanding the health of seagrass ecosystems.
By supporting these monitoring efforts, Sentinels helped provide additional context for how environmental conditions around Fishers Island may influence seagrass growth and resilience.
Another notable collaboration included assisting with an eelgrass flowering study. Flowering events are a key indicator of eelgrass reproduction and long term ecosystem health.
Sentinel involvement helped document when and where flowering occurred, contributing valuable observations to ongoing research focused on understanding seagrass resilience and recovery.
The Fishers Island Seagrass Management Coalition leads a wide range of research, monitoring, and conservation initiatives focused on protecting and restoring seagrass around the island.
