SUMMARY:Evaluating Habitat Recovery on Fishers Island by Tyler McMahon | July 17 @ 5:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:Join Us: An Evening with FIRST Researcher Tyler McMahon\n Friday\, July 17 | 5:30 PM | Fishers Island Community Center \nPlease join the Fishers Island Conservancy for a special community program featuring FIRST (Fishers Island Research & Survey Team) researcher Tyler McMahon on Friday\, July 17th at 5:30 PM at the Fishers Island Community Center. \nTyler will be presenting his PhD proposal defense titled Evaluating Ecological and Social Outcomes of Long-Term Habitat Restoration on Fishers Island\, New York\, a study that takes a close look at how restoration work happening right here on Fishers Island is shaping local biodiversity and community engagement with conservation over time. \nHis research brings together arthropod sampling\, bird surveys\, and public outreach assessment to explore whether restoration efforts are not only improving ecological communities\, but also deepening public support for conservation. It is a question that connects the science happening in the field directly to the community that calls this island home. \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from the researcher doing this work and to learn more about what long-term restoration looks like on Fishers Island. All are welcome and we hope to see you there! \nFor more information contact the Fishers Island Conservancy at [annarwfic@gmail.com]

SUMMARY:Gathering Growth: Working to Visually Preserve the Legacy of Significant Trees | July 31 @ 5:30PM
DESCRIPTION: Friday\, July 31 | 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM  | At the Museum\, 2nd floor and virtual\, via zoom \nJoin the Fishers Island Conservancy and the HL Ferguson Museum for a presentation by photographer Brian Kelley on his work documenting the oldest and largest trees in the U.S. through Gathering Growth Foundation. Friday\, July 31\, 5:30 PM at the Museum. \nKelley is dedicated to visually preserving the legacy of trees and forests while raising awareness about their protection. In 2019\, he founded the Gathering Growth Foundation to expand his work beyond champion trees\, building a growing archive of significant trees and forest landscapes across the United States. To date\, the foundation has documented over 1\,300 trees and is currently completing its first publication\, Gathering Growth Vol. 1: New York. \nRooted in the belief that conservation is as much cultural as it is scientific\, Kelley’s work seeks to create a deeper public connection to the natural world. His images serve not only as documentation\, but as acts of remembrance\, grounded in the idea that before a landscape can be protected\, it must first be known\, and before it can be known\, it must be remembered. \nBrian Kelley received his BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts. He is dedicated to visually preserving the legacy of trees and forests while raising awareness about their protection. Kelley’s extensive work in still-life photography continues to support his artistic pursuit of contributing to the cultural archive of American ephemera and landscape\, including other long-term projects such as The National Park Service Brochures Archive and the Archive of NYCTA Artifacts. Kelley was born in Horseheads\, NY\, and currently lives in Lumberland\, NY. \nThis program is co-hosted by the Fishers Island Conservancy and the Henry L. Ferguson Museum. \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Fight for Wild Salmon: A Talk by Guido Rahr | August 7 @ 5:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:The Fight for Wild Salmon: A Talk by Guido Rahr | Friday\, August 7 | 5:30 pm | FI Movie Theater \nJoin the Conservancy on Friday\, August 7th\, at 5:30 pm at the Fishers Island Theater for a presentation by Guido Rahr\, President and CEO of The Wild Salmon Center\, followed by a screening of Running Wild: Return to the River: The Incredible Life of Pacific Salmon. The film\, narrated by acclaimed actor Liam Neeson\, brings the story of wild salmon to broader audiences and inspires a growing conservation movement. \nRahr will highlight the urgent challenges facing wild salmon populations and the far-reaching impacts of their decline on wildlife\, forests\, rivers\, and local communities. Drawing on examples like Bristol Bay\, the Skeena\, and the Smith\, he will illustrate how habitat protection and healthy forests enhance water quality and strengthen salmon runs\, ultimately emphasizing that the coming years will be critical for conservation action. He has set an ambitious but achievable conservation goal of protecting 20 salmon strongholds across 100 million acres to secure critical ecological\, cultural\, and economic benefits. \nAbout the Film \nWitness one of nature’s most compelling sagas in Running Wild: Return to the River. The film offers a breathtaking immersion into a vital ecosystem\, where the fate of wild salmon is intertwined with iconic wildlife and untamed beauty\, from the grizzlies and wolves that patrol the rivers’ edge to the orcas and eagles reliant on their ocean bounty. Through stunning visuals and intimate storytelling\, the film follows the epic return of wild salmon to the streams where they began\, revealing the deep interdependence of creatures from sea lions to grizzly bears\, and even ourselves\, each playing a crucial part in this vibrant and interconnected world. \nAbout Guido Rahr \nUnder Rahr’s leadership\, the Wild Salmon Center has developed scientific research\, habitat protection\, and fisheries improvement projects across dozens of rivers in Japan\, the Russian Far East\, Alaska\, British Columbia\, and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. His work has raised over $200 million in grants\, established fifteen new conservation organizations and coalitions\, and protected \n \n35.7 million acres of habitat\, including ten new large-scale habitat reserves on key salmon rivers across the Pacific Rim. \nRahr earned a BA in English Literature from the University of Oregon and an MA in Environmental Studies from Yale University. Before joining the Wild Salmon Center\, he developed conservation programs for Oregon Trout\, the United Nations Development Programme\, the Rainforest Alliance\, and Conservation International. He is a member of the IUCN Salmon Specialist Group\, a passionate fly fisherman and fly tyer\, and was awarded the Izaak Walton Award by the American Museum of Fly Fishing in 2024. He lives in Portland\, Oregon\, with his wife\, Lee\, and their three sons. \nRahr’s life and passion for wild salmon are also chronicled in the book Stronghold\, which follows his journey from Oregon to Alaska to one of the world’s last remaining salmon strongholds in the Russian Far East\, contending with scientists\, conservationists\, oligarchs\, and corrupt officials along the way to secure a future for this extraordinary keystone species. \nThis program is hosted by the Fishers Island Conservancy.
