There are many ways to get involved with the Fishers Island Conservancy. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the year, along with a few seasonal paid positions for students interested in gaining hands-on conservation experience. Whether you want to help monitor wildlife, support research projects, or spend time outdoors protecting the island’s natural habitats, we’d love to have you involved.
Volunteer With Us
Shorebird Monitoring
Help monitor and protect nesting shorebirds during the breeding season. Volunteers assist with observing nesting activity and supporting protected beach areas.
Season: April-August
Annual Bird Counts
Join us for seasonal bird counts that help document bird populations and migration activity across Fishers Island.
Season: Spring & Fall
Horseshoe Crab Monitoring
Assist with monitoring and tagging horseshoe crabs during spawning season to help track populations in Long Island Sound.

Youth Sentinel Program
The Sentinel Program is a paid summer opportunity for students interested in gaining hands-on experience in conservation work on Fishers Island. Sentinels assist with monitoring shorelines, supporting wildlife surveys, and helping with conservation projects throughout the summer.
Participants gain field experience while contributing to projects such as shorebird monitoring, horseshoe crab surveys, beach profiling, habitat monitoring, and community outreach. The program also includes training, weekly check-ins, and a final presentation summarizing each Sentinel’s work.
Position Details
- Paid summer position
- Approximately 8–10 hours per week
- 4–6 week commitment during the summer

Responsibilities
- Assist with monitoring protected shorebird nesting areas
- Support horseshoe crab surveys and other seasonal wildlife monitoring
- Collect environmental and habitat data
- Participate in conservation projects and fieldwork across the island
- Assist with community outreach and Conservancy events
Qualifications
- High school an interest in conservation or environmental science
- Strong interest in Fishers Island’s natural habitats and wildlife
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Reliable, organized, and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to participate in fieldwork and training sessions

Summer Internship
We are currently offering a summer internship position for students interested in conservation, field research, and environmental work on Fishers Island.
This internship provides hands-on experience assisting with ecological monitoring, conservation projects, and outreach programs. Interns work closely with our team and help support several summer initiatives across the island.

- Approximately 20–35 hours per week

Internship responsibilities may include
- Assisting with field surveys and ecological monitoring
- Helping coordinate and support the Sentinel program
- Collecting and organizing environmental data
- Supporting outreach events and community education
- Assisting with conservation projects such as shorebird monitoring, horseshoe crab surveys, and habitat assessments
Ideal candidates
- College students, or recent graduates
- Interest in conservation, environmental science, biology, or marine science
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Organized, reliable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team
